Job Description

As the technical designer you will work in collaboration with professors and staff as they assist fashion students in turning ideas into finished products, anticipating any design issues and liaising with students to ensure garments adhere to the established specifications, and that the end results are high-quality, marketable products. In this position you are expected to offer expert technical support in specialized technical design room areas of fabric preparation, pattern layout and marking, garment assembly, and pressing while demonstrating industrial sewing, hand sewing, and fine finishing techniques. Responsibilities include regularly preparing fabric and patterns and supporting the department's needs.

In this role, you will help develop, update, and utilize the library of blocks and patterns to ensure standards are being met to support the best fit and help students expedite their production process. You must measure samples, compare construction, and collaborate and establish professional working relationships. Responsibilities include assisting the fashion department with presenting and conducting fits on live models to ensure fitting of garments and apply possible adjustments, recommending materials and relevant finishing techniques to students, and working on the digital fabric printer. Additionally you will help students with creating spec sheets, evaluating sample prototypes, and inspire performance solutions in constructing high-quality garments.

The ideal candidate should have experience in leading live fittings and in evaluating the overall fit with the ability to make necessary corrections. They must be able to identify apparel flaws quickly and effectively adjust designs on-the-spot. The candidate must be able to maintain a professional environment in specialized studio areas and offer extra help sessions and workshops. They must create supplementary materials for online student access while demonstrating strong knowledge of the entire product development process to assist fashion students in making the best decisions to achieve their desired results, maintaining the integrity of the design concept. They should be comfortable answering and providing information and assistance to students utilizing the fashion studio space, functioning as an additional resource in and out of the classroom in support of learning outcomes and class projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree and relevant work experience in technical design with knowledge of factory production, tools, machinery, and apparel manufacturing skills as documented through work samples and demonstrations




  • Excellent understanding of the apparel design and development process with knowledge of how products are sourced and developed




  • Ability to adjust patterns, analyze garment construction and workmanship, manipulate existing patterns and communicate adjustments




  • Excellent attention to detail with effective time management and organizational skills




  • Takes direction and executes projects and student work without additional supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fashion degree or a degree from a closely related program




  • At least five years of industry experience within technical design and apparel manufacturing




  • Knowledge and skills in Avanc Embroidery Machine, Mutoh Fabric Digital Printer, CLO or other pattern design software




  • Practical experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop software




  • Effective management skills

Travel required: Less than 10%

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
